Topic Work Zone Safety Challenges, Opportunities, and Technologies

Work Zone safety is a vital topic for the prevention of injuries and deaths for both workers and the public. By employing innovative tools and methods, we can significantly reduce accidents and fatalities in these often-hazardous areas.

Some of the safety challenges in work zones include

  • Increased traffic congestion and lane closures: This can lead to distracted driving, tailgating, and reckless maneuvers.
  • Exposure to heavy machinery and moving vehicles: Workers are at constant risk of being struck or caught in equipment.
  • Reduced traffic enforcement: Traffic fatalities are near 25-year highs. Unsafe driving habits are common.
  • Employee complacency: Employees work in unsafe environments so often that they forget the dangers of that environment.

The goal of this discussion is to better understand what you as a safety professional can do for risk reduction.
